Marc Wood

Winner of the award for outstanding provision of learning opportunities in response to learners' needs, Marc Wood is lead tutor of the Step-by-Step project, a key part of Brighton and Hove Council's strategy for helping single homeless people.

Along with other learning tutors from the Friends Centre, Marc goes into Brighton hostels to work with homeless people on a one-to-one basis, addressing their learning needs and helping them into college or the workplace. Marc set up this service in just six weeks, in response to the specific needs of this vulnerable community.

The results of the Step-by-Step project have been remarkable, with many homeless people achieving City and Guilds qualifications, work placements and permanent jobs.

Marc proposes to use his STARlight funding to continue his training in alternative therapies. Utilising his skills in this area will help to increase engagement and motivation, as well as supporting other rehabilitation programmes, and will enable Marc to offer alternative therapy training in the future. Marc would also like to undertake the personal challenge of walking the Pennine Way.
